Our Philosophy

The Riekes Center Rock University is dedicated to each student accomplishing his or her goals in musical development. Rock U. offers programs for song writing, improvisation, recording, and performance, in a fun, exciting environment! Private instruction is available for the guitar, bass, drums, piano, and singing. Our group programs help students speed their musical development through hands-on activities and peer mentoring, while playing their favorite songs! Using music theory, and learning by ear, students gain confidence and competence in playing with others and creating music of their own.

    How We Teach:

  • Small groups & private instruction
  • Hands-on lessons
  • Experienced musicians & mentors
  • Acute listening skills
  • Peer mentoring
  • Low instructor-to-student ratios
  • Music theory & technique
  • Musical appreciation & development through songs and videos
Rock In Action
As teachers and mentors we aim to help students experience the joy of music that has enchanted the human spirit for ages. Instructors facilitate the learning process by providing each student with challenging, exciting and interesting opportunities. We aim to make music fun while providing students with tools that enable them to communicate effectively with other musicians. Ultimately, we strive to give students the curiosity, confidence, and creativity to continue their lifelong journey through the world of music and expression.

Rock 101: Group Music Class

Work in a small group of 3-5 students on an ongoing basis to develop your abilities in the area of performance. The group is chosen to match up the abilities and favorite styles of the students. The songs you learn are chosen to increase your versatility and technical ability. The Group Music Class includes regular performances at our music recitals. Weekly sessions give students the opportunity to develop their performance and improvisation skills in a fun environment. This program includes exercises from Grammy Award-winning musicians Kai Eckhardt and Victor Wooten. We will go over various topics related to improvisation and song writing, including dynamics and syncopation, the styles of rock, funk, punk, and blues, or song structure while learning cover songs or creating our own songs out of thin air. With more advanced groups we may explore different topics including jazz, odd meters, and modes. To speed your progress, private lessons are recommended.
